Press: Critical Acclaim

Ruhr Nachrichten

Yundi is a charmer with his eye on elegance and understatement. […] There were some beautifully limpid sounds rippling through his opening group of Nocturnes and the dreamy first half of the Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante.

Financial Times

He has unquestionably a formidable technique, but never uses it to stun his audience into submission. Rather he deploys it to float a perfectly weighted melody against a broken-chord accompaniment as unruffled and beautiful as a blue lagoon. Or perhaps to unfold a glistening ornamental run of such pearl-like translucence as to beggar belief.
I love too the way Yundi uses his supreme technical command to defy expectation, turning a conventionally virtuoso passage into a poetic reverie, perhaps switching tack halfway through to suggest a different facet.

The Chinese pianist Yundi Li, 26, may not be as sensationally popular as Lang Lang, his countryman of the same age. But in recent years Mr. Li’s career has taken off impressively. Many of his admirers consider Mr. Li a temperamental opposite of Mr. Lang. Both play with prodigious technique, wondrous colorings, delicate passagework and steely power. But if Mr. Lang is prone to Romanticized interpretations, with phrases milked and tugged for maximum expressivity, Mr. Li has been cooler, more straightforward and elegantly restrained.Mr. Li still proved himself a remarkable pianist.
